(1) Energy use and efficiency in modern communication systems: a review (3 Unit Project)
Modern communication systems, such as the internet and wireless communication have been playing a more and more important role in our life. They also use a lot of energy! This project is supposed to do some review and analysis of the energy consumption and efficiency by such communication systems. The student is supposed review some literature, collect information or data and do some analysis of the data, and discuss how the energy efficiency could be improved.
The project would require the students to search references in the literature about power grids, to obtain power grid maps and data from available sources, to learn some elementary graph/complex network tools and measures, and to make computer programs to do some analysis of a power grid.
The objective of the project is to help the student apply the physical, mathematical and computational knowledge that he or she has learned over the last years to understand an important and complex energy systems. .
(2) Energy budget of neural system: a review (3/6 units) - Student ID: 14251302
Like computer CPU, the processing element neurons in the brain will consume energy. Human brain is very energy efficient, with a power of about 20W. It will be very interesting to study how energy is used in the neural systems to generate neural firing and to propagate neural firing in communication and computation. This project is supposed to first review some literature about energy budget in neural system (3 unit).
Through the project, we may obtain understanding how biological systems could efficiently use energy, and such inspiration could be useful to develop energy efficient communication systems and other man-made systems. The student can go further to analyze the energy in wireless, mobile communication network or the parallel computers, and compare the strategy of energy consumptions and discuss possible solutions to improve energy efficiency in communication systems (6 unit).
Project objective: The objective of the project is to help the student apply the physical, mathematical and computational knowledge that he or she has learned over the last years to understand important and complex energy systems.
