Energy use and efficiency in modern communication systems: a review (3 units) - Student id: 18208681, 16226542
Modern communication systems, such as the internet and wireless communication have been playing a more and more important role in our life, and now its time to move to 5G system. They also use a lot of energy! This project is supposed to do some review and analysis of the energy consumption and efficiency by such communication systems. The student is supposed review some literature, collect information or data and do some analysis of the data, and discuss how the energy efficiency could be improved.
The objective of the project is to help the student apply the physical, mathematical and computational knowledge that he or she has learned over the last years to understand an important and complex communication/energy systems. Through the project, the student will have some good ideas of the communication industry in Hong Kong, which may contribute to the career development of the student.
Power grid and smart: a review (3/6 units) - Student id: 16224078, 18208738
Electrical energy is transmitted from generators to users through the wide-spreading electrical power-grid. The grid forms a complex network, which is growing and could have large-scale blackout due to some small-scale, local attracts. The use of green energy (e.g., solar energy), which is not stable, imposes challenges to the stability of the power grid, thus smart grids need to be developed. This project aims to review on power grid and smart grid: how they work and what are the properties. (3 units)
Student can go further to review/study cases of serious blackout of power-grids and their impact and analyze how it could be related to the properties of the power grid, for example, using complex network or graph models. Or student can study further how smart grid uses the sensors and do the data collection and control to achieve stability. (6 units)
The objective of the project is to help the student apply the physical, mathematical and computational knowledge that he or she has learned over the last years to understand an important and complex energy system. Through the project, the student will have some good ideas of the smart grid development, which is an important part of the Smart City Blueprint of Hong Kong (https://www.smartcity.gov.hk/), which may contribute to the career development of the student.
