Home Energy Audit (3/6 units)

This project involves conducting a DIY home (or dormitory) energy audit by combining the  knowledge that you’ve learned from the Energy Management courses with online apps and  offline tools, e.g., your smart phone. For instance, you can couple a thermal imager (such as  Seek Thermal camera) with your smart phone to detect cold or hot spots around the house,  which are areas of air leakage that may need extra insulation. There are also many online apps  that can assist energy consumption measurements and calculations for home energy audit.  

For 3-unit project: You should first write up an energy audit protocol with detailed  procedures, including both the measurements and calculations involved. Then you can use  different measurement tools as well as search the internet and app stores to locate online  tools and apps that can be employed for performing the audit. With the protocol plus online  and offline tools ready, you will conduct energy audit for either your home or dormitory,  and finally write up a comprehensive energy audit report.

For 6-unit project: You need to accomplish all as listed for the 3-unit project. In addition,  you need to suggest energy-saving measures based on the audit results, implement these energy saving measures for your home or dormitory, and evaluate the extent of energy/money saving after the measure implementation.  

Quantitative Mechanism of Energy-efficient Motor (3/6 units)

There are a wide variety of ways to construct motors so as to convert different energy sources to mechanical motion. From different types of heat engines, electric motor to hydraulic motor, the ingenious designs based on physical and chemical principles are quite fascinating. The goal of this project is to develop a better understanding of the quantitative mechanism underlying energy-efficient motors.

For 3-unit project: you will perform a literature review on a variety of motors of your choice. Through the project, you will quantitatively compare the motors’ designs and efficiencies, identify the underlying physics of their working principles and discuss the strength/weakness of each design that affect the energy conversion efficiency.

For 6-unit project: you will construct a motor based on existing model, measure its energy conversion efficiency and then improve its efficiency by revising the design.


Green Building Design and Operation: Recent Advancement (3 units)

This project involves surveying existing green buildings (in terms of energy efficiency) around the world through reviewing information from websites and literature as well as site visit, if possible. Based on the gathered information, you will write a comprehensive overview of currently available green technologies in building design and operation, especially with a focus on recent technological developments. The goal is to expand up-to-date knowledge of green technologies that may be employed as energy management measures in HK, where buildings account for over 60% of the overall energy consumption.

For this project, you will mainly gather information from the internet and literature, and then write a comprehensive overview of currently available and the most cutting-edge green technologies in building design and operation around the world, especially with a focus on quantitative and mechanistic analysis of each technology in improving energy efficiency.
