Smart grid and renewable energy for smart city: a review (3 units)

Project description:
The use of sustainable energy (e.g., solar and wind) with a smart grid is getting important for sustainable development of smart city, which is an important initiative in HK. This project aims to review recent governmental initiatives and policies in smart city and how renewable energy, smart grid and other green technologies can be applied and further developed for smart city in Hong Kong and in the Greater Bay Area. The topic can cover the environmental benefit of sustainable energy and smart grid, working principles, technology and cost-efficiency of various types of renewable energy (e.g., solar and wind), and the challenges of their transmission/usage in smart grid and previous growth statistics and development trends. Case-studies in other cities in the world can be introduced as a bench mark. 


Project objective:
The objective of the project is to help the student apply the knowledge of physics, green energy and technology, and computation that he or she has learned over the last years in our Physics and Green Engrgy programme to understand an important aspect of energy system (i.e., smart grid) in smart city. Through the project, the student will have some good ideas of the smart grid/renewable and green energy, which is an important part of the Smart City Blueprint of Hong Kong (Smart City Blueprint 2.0, https://www.smartcity.gov.hk/), which may contribute to the career development of the student. 


Green energy for modern communication systems: a review (3 units)

Project description:
Modern communication systems, such as the internet and wireless communication have been playing a more and more important role in our life, and now its time to move to 5G system. They also consume a lot of energy! This project is supposed to do some review and analysis of the energy consumption and efficiency by such communication systems, paying special attention how green energy can be integrated into the new enerations of the communication systems. The student is supposed to review some literature, collect information or data and do some analysis of the data, 
and discuss how the energy efficiency could be improved, and what will be the cost-effectiveness for the communication systems to use green energy.

Project objective:
The objective of the project is to help the student apply the physical, mathematical and computational knowledge that he or she has learned over the last years to understand an important and complex communication/energy systems. Through the project, the student will have some good ideas of the communication industry in Hong Kong, which may contribute to the career development of the student.
