Dr Guancong Ma has been awarded the President's Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work

Dr. Ma Guancong

As a distinguished physicist and acoustician, Dr. Ma Guancong has extraordinary achievements in the areas of acoustic engineering, metamaterials, topological physics and non-Hermitian physics. The remarkable value that he has brought to the science is exemplified by the volume of impactful papers he has published in globally renowned journals, the invitations he has received to speak at notable conferences around the world, and the variety of prestigious awards bestowed on him.

Dr. Ma has published over 50 papers on peer-reviewed journals, including Science, Nature, Nature Materials, Nature Physics, Physical Review X, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), among others. Most notably, his review article on topological acoustics and mechanics in Nature Review Physics has been selected as part of Nature Research’s themed article collection titled “40 Years of Quantum Hall Effect”.

Since 2019, Dr. Ma has made significant breakthroughs in his research expertise fields, leading to 20 publications in top journals, including eight pieces in Physical Review Letters, as well as Nature, Science, Nature Physics and Nature Photonics. To benchmark the quality of these studies, they have been confidently compared to a 4* rating under the University Grants Committee (UGC) Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) framework.

Having consistently demonstrated highest standard in research, Dr. Ma was recognized by the Research Grants Council (RGC) with the highly competitive and prestigious RGC Research Fellow award in 2022, an honour which brought HK$5.15 million in research funding. He has also obtained three General Research Fund (GRF) projects since 2019 as Principal Investigator (PI).

The impact of Dr. Ma’s research is demonstrated by the Google Scholar count of over 6,500 total citations. Two of the articles, for which he was the corresponding author, have received exceptional impact factor ratings – with 67.5 for the Non-Hermitian Morphing of Topological Modes published in Nature, and 63.7 for the Exceptional Nexus with a Hybrid Topological Invariant published in Science. He has also been listed as a World’s Top 2% Scientist by Clarivate consecutively since 2020.

The more than 15 notable international conferences to which he has been invited to deliver talks include META 2022 Metamaterials in Finland and Italy, plus the United States in 2018, 2019 and 2021 respectively, the European Solid Mechanics Conference 2018 in Italy and the PhotonIcs and Electromagnetics Research Symposium (PIERS) 2019 & 2021 in the Mainland China

Furthermore, Dr. Ma’s interdisciplinary expertise has been recognized by multiple awards and honours, including the C.N. Yang Award 2022 by the Association of Asia Pacific Physical Societies and the Asia Pacific Centre for Theoretical Physics, the Top 10 Rising Star in Science and Technology 2021 award by the China Association for Science and Technology, and the Excellent Young Scientist (Hong Kong and Macao) award presented by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 2019. Also, Dr. Ma holds 11 patents from the U.S. and China.

In recognizing his exemplary efforts in advancing acoustic physics, the Selection Committee has no hesitation in conferring on him the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work.
