The Department of Physics organized a Forum on “From Metamaterials to non-Hermitian and beyond” on 23 March 2023. Sponsored by Hung Hin Shiu Charitable Foundation, the event brought academics from Imperial College London, The University of Hong Kong (HKU), The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) to share and discuss the latest research findings and new insights on metamaterial and non-Hermitian physics.

The Forum is organized to provide the opportunity to exchange new ideas and also further strengthen ongoing collaborations. Presentations were made in the morning session. Speakers included Prof Sir John PENDRY FRS, recipient of 2010 Honorary Doctorate degree in Science from HKBU and Chair Professor in Theoretical Solid State Physics, Imperial College London; Prof Che Ting CHAN, Chair Professor of Physics, HKUST; Prof Din Ping TSAI, Chair Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering, CityU; Prof Shuang ZHANG, Chair Professor of Physics, HKU and Prof Kok Wai CHEAH, Dr Elizabeth K.S. Law Endowed Professor in Advanced Materials and Chair Professor of Physics, Hong Kong Baptist University.

In the afternoon session, the scholars discussed on future trend and research direction in metamaterials, especially the new approach in metamaterial characterization: time variation. Research postgraduate students actively posed questions on research attitude, innovation and realization of concepts. It was agreed that these interactions were extremely useful. The Forum attracted around 60 participants including academics and research postgraduate students from local institutions (HKU, CUHK, HKUST, CityU and HKBU) and Greater Bay Area (Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen and South China Normal University).
