The Department of Physics secured an educational funding (~HK$600k) from EDB Gifted Education Fund: Off-school Advanced Learning Programmes titled as “Big Energy Data Collection and Analysis of Domestic Electric Energy Consumption: A Special Challenge for Gifted School Student Researchers (給資優學生研究員的一項特殊挑戰：住宅用電量數據採集與大數據分析)”.

This project aims to deliver the most talented school students i) the knowledge in smart cities, Internet of Things (IoT) and efficient use of energy through authentic research of domestic electric energy consumption, ii) practical skills in coding through developing mobile Apps to monitor household electric energy consumption and other environmental data such as the temperature and relative humidity, iii) first-hand experiences in big energy data retrieval, analysis and interpretation with a view of strengthening their problem-solving capability, and iv) positive values and attitudes towards energy usage and energy conservation.
