PHYS 7050: Advanced Topics in Physics II (Solid State Physics)

About the Course

This subject studies applications of statistical physics and quantum mechanics to the solid state of matter. Aspects included are crystal structures, X-ray diffraction, lattice dynamics, thermal properties, and band theory of solid.

The course will mainly cover the below topics:

  1. Crystal Structures
  2. Wave diffraction from periodic structures
  3. Dynamics of atoms in crystal
  4. Thermal properties of crystal lattices
  5. The electronic band structure of solids

Students are recommended to have prior knowledge in statistical physics.

Lecture (3 hours per week) and tutorials.

  1. Continuous Assessment (E.g. Assignment, Presentation, Mid-term, etc.).
  2. A two-hour final examination.

First semester.
