The research postgraduate (RPg) student representatives of the Faculty of Science of HKBU successfully organized a memorable hiking event on January 27, 2024, bringing together RPg students including our PHYS Department members for a day of connection and exploration. The destination, Tai Lam Country Park: Thousand Island Lake, provided a stunning backdrop for fostering bonds and appreciating the local environment.

Commencing from Long Ping MTR Station at 10:30 am, participants embarked on a 4-hour journey through the scenic trails, starting at Tai Tong Shan Road Rain Shelter and concluding at So Kwun Wat Tsuen Tin Hau Temple. The cloudy and slightly cold weather did not dampen the spirits, as the RPg community embraced the opportunity to break free from the city's hustle-and-bustle.

During the hike, volunteers engaged participants in enlightening discussions on wildlife conservation. Actively participating in their questionnaire survey, the RPg community contributed valuable insights to support local conservation efforts.

Adding a cultural dimension to the experience, some students embraced local customs by offering incense and prayers at a mountain temple encountered along the route. This cultural immersion highlighted the diversity within the RPg community.

"This hiking event was not just about physical activity; it was a holistic experience of connecting with nature, each other, and the local culture," said Sida Chen, a PHYS RPg student expressing the success of the event.

The RPg representatives encourage the continued engagement of RPg students in such networking activities, creating lasting connections beyond the academic realm.
