The Department of Physics concludes Orientation Day for new MSc students in Green Technology (Energy) programme

The Department of Physics proudly hosted an engaging orientation day for the Master of Science in Green Technology (Energy) programme on 16 September 2025 at FSC501, HSH Campus, HKBU! This year, we are delighted to welcome 70 new MSc students. It was a wonderful opportunity for our faculty members to greet our newest members and make them feel at home.

The orientation began with a welcome address by Prof. SO Shu Kong, Head and Professor of the Department of Physics at HKBU, followed Dr. HU Qian, Programme Director of MSc in Green Technology (Energy) programme, who provided a detailed introduction to the programme structure, study activities, scholarship opportunities and capstone projects at the event.

Following the welcome speech, Prof. SO and Mr. Tenny TAM, the President of the AEE Hong Kong Chapter, presented student awards to recognize outstanding students in the previous cohort. The awards included the “Merit Scholarship” offered by the Department to encourage the top 3 students based on the cumulative GPA score, and the “AEE HK Chapter Scholarship” offered by the AEE HK Chapter to commend the top 5 students in the Certified Energy Manager examination.

The faculty members then briefly introduced their projects that span a wide range of themes—from AI and data science to sustainable materials and device engineering, energy and power systems, bioelectronics, and science-education studies. This session enabled new students to choose topics of their final project that fit their strengths and career goals, gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge labs and strength their profiles for further study or industry roles.

Following project introduction session, Dr. CHOI Wing Hong, Associate Programme Director of MSc in Green Technology (Energy) programme, provided an overview of the final project selection process and delivered the closing remarks. He encouraged students to explore interdisciplinary topics and take the initiative to discuss with Supervisors to ensure the smooth and timely completion of their projects.

The event concluded with an alumni sharing session. Graduates from the class of 2025—CHANG Huishan, LUO Yixin and CHEN Chufan, shared their valuable experiences on exciting campus life tips, study strategies, internship prospects, job-hunting skills and more. Their insights motivated all freshmen to begin mapping out their vibrant journeys at HKBU, in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. The graduates also exchanged contact information to foster networking and further connections.

A heartfelt thanks to all faculty members, guests and alumni for their participation and contributions in making the Orientation Day a success. We wish the new cohort every success in their studies at HKBU and a productive, inspiring year ahead.
